In the Gorge, formula gear can be used in lighter wind than kite gear, because it's gusty and spotty, and you often need float to get UP to the wind. There's a bunch of other places like that too--anywhere with offshore wind really. But, it places with light steady side shore or onshore wind, like San Diego or Florida, kite gear can work before FW, especially off the beaches with even smallish shore break, where FW can be an f'ing handful--as opposed to a huge kite way overhead.
I've broken all sorts of FW stuff in shore-break.
But yesterday I was marginally planning on a slalom board and 7.6 in some light offshore conditions while the kites couldn't even get out to the windline--I watched one guy struggle in the water for his whole session- 45 minutes or so all in the water before he finally made it back in.
(I hope he didn't get sucked out be using me for a wind dummy, but I'll bet he did)
So, if you've got very light winds, waves and shorebreak-a kite may be better. If you've got gusty or offshore conditions - FW or a big slalom board will usually be better. |
