The dash sign lets the island management know that you are up on the rules and that your car is not just being stored there. The guard at the front gate may eventually stop people with windsurfing gear that do not display the sign in order to make sure they are clear on the fact that they can't park in resident spots, can't drive off the paved roads or bypass closures, etc. The sign also could have a safety impact if it helps figure out when someone did not make it back to shore, whether it be an equipment failure or injury or other cause (although this has been the exception at TI in my experience vs. Crissy where we've had a few sucked out the Gate).

The miscreants already know that you are out sailing if you have the usual board racks, or big stack of gear inside your car. I have never had a break in but do worry about it. I hide my wallet inside the toddler car seat figuring that if I lose my money it at least went to someone who might really need it. I actually don't know of any windsurfers who have been broken into yet. It may be that we come late enough in the afternoon that we miss the prime break in windows which are probably overnight and closer to noon when the bad guys figure the most people are away from the area for school or work.

The dash sign ...

So what does a dash sign look like? D-A-S-H, spelled out? or a big red minus sign?

Thanks Jim.

This is a big deal for Berkeley sailors who do not have the right gear and need to spend 30 minutes plus slogging upwind to the Olympic circle. I timed it yesterday and it took me 12 minutes from the parking lot at the Berkeley Marina to the parking at the apartment complex on TI.

Keep up the good work and let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

Alas, will our exquisite under-the-radar utopia be destroyed by bureaucracy and publicity?

Utopia still intact as of yesterday. I had it all to myself.

Peter Thorner said in a previous post that a dash sign was being generated for windsurfers to post during their TI visits. Is anyone working on this? Is there a link yet?
