I've tried this move about 40 times to date. When I get decent board rotation before landing, the ligaments along the arch of my back foot seem at risk for getting strained or worse. (I am limping from yesterday's attempts.)
My thinking.
1. More weight on front foot when landing.
2. Keep toes pointed.
3. Rotate back knee upwind as back foot rotates before landing.
Any other ideas or opinions? |

ankle injuries during vulcans or derivatives can certainly happen but they are rare. I used to think about this all the time, and probably kept me from trying it for a season or two before I committed. I'm happy to report that after several thousands attempts and landed vulcans, I never hurt my ankles ( a bit sore a few times, but never any pain that kept me from sailing or trying again).
The key to success is mostly in the sail, and how you sheet in as you initiate the jump. All the other feaures are important, but inconsequential if you don't get the sail part right first. Look at videos in slow motion, and sign up for a clinic lesson with Whyatt, and get feedback from friends that have this move dialed. You'll see that different advice is needed as you progress. Be patient with this move, but for the most part, don't worry about your ankles or injuries! |
