An older friend of mine promised that he'd take me out to the SF bay during the summer. Now, I'm a high school student, and I was wondering if my light-wind 125l board is too big for the bay? I remember reading in a 2006 Windsurfing Magazine that 115l and 90l are optimal for the bay.

P.S. It's a 2006 125l Tabou Rocket <3

Mostly depends on your size, skill level, location of sailing, conditions, etc. My first Bay board was an Astro Rock/Bic about the volume. David

I'd say it depends. It will work fine in flatter areas like Palo Alto or Candlestick. It will work great on light wind days. It will feel like a lot of board on most 18 to 22 knot days, which are many. Assuming you are not 200+ pounds and can waterstart, then you will soon be shopping for a smaller board. Can I interest you in a slightly used but well cared for...

For your refernce.

I'm a 220 lb intermediate working on completing more jibes.

I use a Titan 125 from 7.5 to 5.9 at Palo alto, 3rd and coyote.

The board starts feeling too big if the wind over powers my 5.9 - when the avg gets above 22 and the gusts approach 30.

It is great for flatter palo alto, but its a lot to handle on an ebb at 3rd or coyote

Yeah, I go to shoreline or Palo Alto, so it's fine with my 7.5 there... I'm around 160lbs, so I think it might be a bit big out on the bay, but I guess, just for once it should be alright...

In the oft-quoted and variously-translated words usually attributed to Friedrich Nietzsche: That which does not kill us makes us stronger. Besides, you're a kid, you'll heal. Wink

Apologies to Nietzche, and Steve Sylvester who quotes him frequently, but sometimes what almost kills us just almost kills us...

Ha, ha. I don't think old Friedrich is gonna care but as for me, point taken. Fred seems like a bright young guy (after all he's a windsurfer) and I think he'll be fine on the bay with his 125l and 6.6, as long as he keeps it in the 20 knot range or less. And how great it will be to feel some of that clean bay wind. As for healing, I was thinking of sore muscles, not broken bones.
