Surf wax works good as a quick temporary waterproof fix.

Yes, sounds like going left at San Carlos so you'll be riding upwind, heel side. Not the funnest way to waveride but totally doable. Get some video!

Pull in on the back hand and look backwards. This will cause your body to rotate and you will land on your back rather than faceplant. Much easier on the body.
