I have not sailed Willoughby, heard it is very "Gorge like" in a strong SE wind. It takes me the same amount of time to drive as driving to Lake Champlain.
Not everyone has moved to the Cap ...

Sandbar State park is a great beginners spot. As you progress, keep driving to White's beach then to Plattsburgh Bay
