Fred Meyer sells 3M tape 1mm thick with adhesive on both sides.
Stick the tape on the inside of the clamp, then put the clamp on the boom.

I attach my Garmin 301 to the mast right above the boom. It the safest place wrt any kind of falls and mast rarely goes deep in water in case of a swim.
